If your selection is on the first empty cell under a column when you press the AUTOSUM button Excel will assume that you want to add all the numbers in that column and place the result in the empty cell. The formula will be in the form of sum11. Click the cell with the number to select it hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard then click the bottom-right corner of the selected cell and drag it down or right until all of the cells in which you wish to add your numbers are selected.
