A Formula One Grand Prix is a sporting event which takes place over three days with a series of practice and qualifying sessions prior to the race on Sunday. Watkins Glen International nicknamed The Glen is an automobile race track located in the town of Dix just southwest of the village of Watkins Glen New York at the southern tip of Seneca LakeIt was long known around the world as the home of the Formula One United States Grand Prix which it hosted for twenty consecutive years 19611980 but the site has also been home to road racing. Current regulations provide for two free practice sessions on Friday a morning practice session and an afternoon qualifying session held on Saturday and the race held on Sunday afternoon or evening though the structure of the weekend has changed numerous times over the history of the sport.

The two long straights are exactly 58 miles the short straights are exactly 18 miles and the corners are 14 miles. The race length is defined as the smallest number of complete laps that exceeds 305 Km though occasionally some races are truncated due to special circumstances. Formula 1 has contracted a single supplier of tyres since the 2007 season. The number of laps in a race is obtained by dividing 305 by the length of a lap which differs from track to track.
